Shou Sugi Ban. The japanese technique of preserving and finishing wood by charring it with fire. The process involves carefully charring the surface of the wood with a flame. This charred finish can be left or brushed away and oiled with clear, or coloured oil to reveal the underlying grain. The result is a beautiful and unique texture that protects the wood from water, insects, and rot.

The term "Shou Sugi Ban" is actually a Western term, the process is called Yakisugi in Japan.

Not only does it look fantastic, but the charred surface of the wood also has a natural resistance to fire, making it a popular choice for cladding, fencing, and other exterior applications (not to mention decorative interior applications).
